A post in honour of #NationalHandshakeDay – One of our policies at Mason Alexander is that you must greet all colleagues with a handshake when you arrive in the morning.
“One of the biggest challenges I think facing businesses today is the culture that exists within them. Companies have gone to great lengths in the past few years to create better work-life balances, more modern offices and added benefits like gym membership and bike-to-work schemes. But where companies can really let themselves down is how senior executives interact with employees across all levels of the firm.
A number of years ago, I worked in a company where managers wouldn’t speak to people beneath them (unless necessary) and I can recall a few occasions where my “good morning” was ignored. I’m not sure why the people I had greeted felt it necessary not to reply (obviously because I was a junior member of staff) and if by doing so, I would look at them in awe or be impressed by their stature; but whatever it was, it had the opposite effect. You see, the very best leaders are aware of their surroundings and make an effort with everyone from their management team right down to graduates.
The easiest thing for us is to get caught up in our own self-importance. Not in any malignant way, but our lives are so busy that we don’t recognise the people around us and our behaviour to them and how the smallest acknowledgment can change how people see you and react towards you.
Although my business is relatively small compared to a large corporation, I make sure that everyone is treated equally and everyone is available and approachable to one another. This, I feel, has created a comfortable and enjoyable working environment and has built a team spirit where we like to see each other doing well instead of competing against each other or hoping someone doesn’t succeed. If a manager can take time out of their day to acknowledge people in their business, this small gesture will create a trust, loyalty and a following from their employees who will feel appreciated and motivated to do their very best for the company. And the beauty about this is, it can been done with a simple handshake and “good morning”.”

Great news from TechIreland! Irish tech start-ups raised nearly €400M in Q2 2024, the best performance since Q2 2022. This is a huge jump from €169M in Q1 and surpasses the €323M raised in the same period last year. In total, €552M was secured by 147 companies in the first half of 2024 🚀
Key highlights:
💡 Series B rounds saw €275M raised by six companies.
💡 Record-breaking growth rounds with major deals for SyOx Therapeutics (€70.3M), Accounts IQ (€60M), GridBeyond (€52 million), Tines (€45 million), and XOcean (€45 million).
💡 Dublin-based companies led with 67% of the total funding.

Ireland's Pharma and Medical industry has bounced back in recent months with a 21% increase in exports this May compared to last year. Major players like Boston Scientific and Thermo Fisher are raising their profit forecasts, due to the growing demand for heart devices and non-urgent surgeries that were postponed during the pandemic 👩🏻⚕️
Boston Scientific announced last year that it would create 400 new jobs in Clonmel and invest €80m in expanding its manufacturing and R&D capabilities. Meanwhile, Thermo Fisher Scientific reported better-than-expected Q2 profits, bolstered by demand for its clinical trial tools and services 📈

Great news for Beckman Coulter Diagnostics, the largest employer in East Clare and among the largest in the county, with their announcement of a €10 million investment that underscores their commitment to innovation and growth in the region 👏🏼
The investment will enhance Beckman Coulter’s world-class diagnostics production with the addition of two new fully automated reagent filling lines and upgrades to the site’s infrastructure, boosting both efficiency and capacity.
Beckman Coulter’s economic contribution is highly significant to East Clare and the wider Mid-West region thanks to the 550 plus jobs it provides in its facility. Employment at the site is anticipated to rise to 600 jobs, with headcount figures having almost doubled since 2018 📈

Very positive news for the Pharma sector as the value of Irish exports has grown from €6.2 billion to €72.4 billion in the first four months of 2024. CSO figures show exports of medical and pharmaceutical products increased by €3.5 billion (66%) to €8.8 billion in April alone 📈💊
This rebound in Pharma activity is very encouraging given the concerns of a slump last year due to a collapse in demand for Covid vaccines and medications – triggering a downturn in Irish Pharma exports.
This recovery signifies a notable turnaround, demonstrating the resilience and adaptability of the Irish pharmaceutical industry 👏🏼
