Senior Software Engineer
About the role:

This role is on the Strava Communications & Personalisation Platform Team, a team with a diverse skill set who work together on the infrastructure, libraries, and tools that handle mobile notifications, emails, and personalisation/targeting capabilities. We send tens of millions transactional emails a week and over a hundred million notifications a week through the platform and infrastructure that this team maintains.

Our systems are used by all engineers at Strava to create touch points with athletes in various stages of their feature lifecycle. Engineers on the Communications & Personalisation Team work on a very wide variety of projects and technologies; recent projects have ranged from rearchitecting and upgrading our notification infrastructure to building a pacing system for targeting in-app promotions to users.

We’re looking to hire a Senior Server Engineer for our Communications & Personalisation team! This person will be joining a small, decisive team that will design, prototype, and implement the infrastructure for Strava to continually improve our messaging and targeting capabilities.

You’re excited about this opportunity because you will:

  • Write high-quality production code that enables our engineers to send timely and personalised communications to millions of athletes on Strava
  • Provide technical leadership on the team
  • Collaborate daily with partners in product and design to implement the team roadmap

  • Foster an engineering culture which makes your peers feel understood and included

You will be successful here by:

  • Having passion and curiosity towards building an emphatic communications experience for our athletes

  • Building well documented and easy-to-use systems that are quickly and widely adopted across our engineering organisation

  • Collaborating with our internal partners in product, design, marketing, analytics, and support

  • Mentoring other engineers and up levelling the organisation by writing blog posts and giving tech talks about your work.

We’re excited about you because you have experience with:

  • Building services in a production environment (using languages like Ruby, Java, Python, Scala, or similar)

  • Managing cloud based infrastructure (using AWS, Azure, or similar)

  • Working with relational or NoSQL databases in Production (we use MySQL, Redis, Cassandra, and Scylla)

  • Open source distributed systems technologies. We use Kafka, ZooKeeper, Finagle, Storm, Spark, Elastic-search, Mesos, and Docker.

  • Awareness of general coding best practices, documentation, and testing

About Strava

Strava is Swedish for “strive,” which epitomises who we are and what we do. We’re a passionate and committed team, unified by our mission to connect athletes to what motivates them and help them find their personal best. And with billions of activity uploads from all over the world, we have a humbling and audacious vision: to be the record of the world’s athletic activities and the technology that makes every effort count.

Strava builds software that makes the best part of our athletes’ days even better. And just as we’re deeply committed to unlocking their potential, we’re dedicated to providing a world-class, inclusive workplace where our employees can grow and thrive, too. We’re backed by Sequoia Capital, Madrone Partners and Jackson Square Ventures, and we’re expanding in order to exceed the needs of our growing community of global athletes. Our culture reflects our community – we are continuously striving to hire and engage diverse teammates from all backgrounds, experiences and perspectives because we know we are a stronger team together.

In light of the global pandemic, Strava is currently working in a fully remote capacity. As always, we remain committed to fully supporting our employees, especially their mental health and wellbeing, through these challenging times. Despite challenges in the world around us, we are continuing to grow camaraderie and positivity within our culture and we are unified in our commitment to becoming an antiracist company. We are differentiated by our truly people-first approach, our compassionate leadership, and our belief that we can bring joy and inspiration to athletes’ lives — now more than ever. All to say, it’s a great time to join Strava!
