With our lives having been pretty much consumed by sport over the past few weeks, we have all witnessed an array of professionals take their careers to the next level.
We often see “hard work” confused with “luck” and indeed, the majority of high-fliers did not get to the top of their respective “games” by pure chance, but rather, through hard work and dedication, along with some form of a strategy.
We can take all of the glamorous musicians, actors, sports stars, fitness professionals and businesspeople who we see in the media daily, as examples. I can guarantee you they all have their own success story to tell; they certainly did not get to where they are now by being merely “lucky”, whatever that really means.
If you, like me, are still revelling from Andy Murray’s recent Wimbledon victory, followed closely by a triumphant Portuguese soccer team, why not try these few easy steps to help you gain even more success in your own career (you may not win a trophy but are sure to feel rewarded!):
Prioritise and Set Goals
Determine your short-term and long-term goals and evaluate your progress frequently.
Be Focused
It’s easy to be a busy fool. Try to block out all distractions so that you have time to truly focus on your tasks and career.
Recognise Your Merits
Know your strengths and weaknesses. If you think you deserve a position or promotion, claim it.
Accept Challenges
It is a good idea to step away from your comfort zone and explore new horizons. If you settle into a routine and play it safe all the time, you will never get ahead in your career.
‘If you always do what you’ve always done, you’ll only get what you’ve already got’.
Communication
Learn to communicate effectively. Listen to what others are saying and focus on how to give and receive constructive feedback.
Seek Satisfaction
If you are disappointed with what you are doing, try to transform it into something you love. If you fail, it might be a good idea to do something different.
As Confucius said: ‘Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life‘.
Finding success in a career you love and enjoy can be difficult to come by. However, what many people do not realise is that anyone can find success in their job if you simply alter the way you think about work.
You will rarely find work a pleasure if you hate your job or cannot stand your boss. In fact, it will be impossible for you to ever attract a great job with that mind frame.
So, like we do here in Mason Alexander, put into your career what you hope to get out of it and if you find yourself wanting to make bigger steps towards success, please call or email me on 01 685 4414/s.dwyer@masonalexander.ie
